How to recognize Perimenopause—and tips on managing it
We don’t talk nearly enough about menopause and its predecessor, perimenopause. And, considering that approximately 50% of the world’s population will experience both, this is, well, ridiculous. And right here in the Inner West and Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, it’s the same story - my clinic rooms are filled with women getting help for this stage! We should all know what to expect so that we can be prepared and know when we should seek outside help.
So let’s get talking about it!
What is perimenopause?
Like most things in life, perimenopause is different for each person. We talked about it in a couple of posts already (read here and here to catch up), but symptoms can vary in both duration and intensity and they usually begin during a person’s 40’s—although they can start as early as the mid-30’s.
Perimenopause is caused by hormonal fluctuations and irregularities as the ovaries gradually slow down their production of oestrogen and progesterone. But what does this actually mean for women?
Well, like I said up above, it’s different for every body. But here are some of the more common symptoms:
· Irregular menstrual cycles including variations in the length of your cycle, the flow of your periods, or even skipped periods altogether
· Hot flashes and night sweats are sudden sensations of intense heat—often accompanied by sweating—that can disrupt sleep and daily activities
· Vaginal changes caused by decreased oestrogen levels like vaginal dryness, itching, or discomfort during intercourse
· Mood swings and emotional changes can be caused by fluctuating hormones and lead to mood swings, irritability, anxiety, or feelings of sadness or depression
· Sleep disturbances like difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or poor sleep quality can be common during perimenopause, contributing to fatigue and daytime drowsiness
How acupuncture can help ease perimenopause symptoms
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine may well help support you through this transitional time, no matter how it’s showing up for you. Acupuncture works with your body, helping to nudge it back into balance.
Here are a few of the ways it can help manage your symptoms:
· Managing menstrual irregularities and providing relief from unpredictable or heavy periods common during perimenopause
· Relieving hot flashes and night sweats or at least reducing the intensity and frequency (1)
· Enhancing emotional wellbeing by reducing anxiety, irritability, and mood swings (2)
· Supporting sleep quality by promoting restful sleep and addressing issues such as insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns (3)
A gentle and holistic approach
Perimenopause is a natural transition that every woman experiences (not a medical problem), but the associated symptoms can be challenging to navigate. Acupuncture offers a gentle and holistic approach to managing the physical and emotional changes during this time. It’s got a great rep for treating the more troubling symptoms, so well worth a shot, don’t you think?
You definitely don’t need to go through this time alone, and there are ways to manage the symptoms. If you are (or think you might be) going through perimenopause and could use some help, reach out.
You’re not alone. Xx
