The days are getting shorter… the leaves are falling… and the air is chilly. I’m definitely a fan of Autumn 🍂🍃🍁 and even more so, this time of change and transition. Chinese Medicine (CM) is all about seasonal living and being in sync with nature, so how about a quick guide to mark this moment?
Your Autumn Wellbeing Toolkit
First and foremost, it's important to allow ourselves to adjust our routines to support both physical and mental health during this time. Here are some elements to include:
Mindful Movement: It’s not new, and we all know that exercise is essential for maintaining a healthy body and mind. But did you know that movement can (and should!) change as the weather changes? At this time with the weather cooling down, try incorporating some gentle outdoor activities such as walking or yoga. Make it a moving meditation as you take in the seasonal colours and breathe in that crisp air.
Warmth + Comfort: Autumn can be a time of physical and emotional transition, so it's important to wrap ourselves up on both levels! It’s the times for self-support with hot cups of tea or chai, snuggling up lavender heat packs, and digging into warm, nourishing foods such as soups and stews.
Immune-Boosting Foods: Been a bit more sniffly lately? You’re not alone. As we transition from Summer to Autumn (and indeed any seasonal switch), our immune systems can sometimes become more vulnerable to illness. Incorporating immune-boosting foods such as garlic, ginger, mushrooms, and leafy greens can help support our immune system and keep us healthy.
Rest + Relaxation: You might have noticed that with the daylight savings switch and evenings that get darker earlier, you’re feeling sleepy earlier. Follow this lead! It's important to adjust routines to prioritise rest and relaxation. Get enough sleep, and try to incorporate relaxation techniques (meditation, deep breathing, or gentle stretching) into your daily routine.
Self-Care: Life is busy, and self-care is sometimes touted as a cure-all. It’s not - but it IS a vital part of wellness. More than anything, prioritising YOU is medicine. So take some time to chill, to read a book, carve out time for a hobby or engage in a night time routine that mirrors self love.
Your reminder to take care of you!
If anything, the change of season is a perfect time to check in with yourself and notice if you’re looking out for the most important person in your world - you. Let me know which of the above sounds like a plan!
PS - a seasonal acupuncture treatment is always a good idea! You can catch me for a treatment at both Bondi and Newtown.
